Artistic Research / Video Installation

“The Urban Cultures of Global Prayers / Case Study Berlin” an artistic research project by Magdalena Kallenberger and Dorothea Nold

As part of the artistic research project GLOBAL PRAYERS BERLIN, RAUMTAUSCH investigates the transformation of a secular space into a religious space. Which transformation can be experienced during the process of appropriation? Which means and methods are used to stage the religious? Which interventions can be observed? Which elements and objects are used?

The artists video cameras document the transformation process starting with the empty spaces: Meditative calmness in static shots. The arrival of the “service preparation team”. The space gets slowly filled with sounds, voices, laughter and music. The pre-arrangement: The installation of technical elements and objects followed up by the test phase with soundcheck and prayers. The documentation ends with the beginning of the service, which leads to the title of the the video works: “x Hours y minutes till xy xm“.

The artistic research project RAUMTAUSCH got exhibited at “The Urban Cultures of Global Prayers” Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst (NGBK) Berlin November 12, 2011–January 8, 2012 and Camera Austria Graz January 28, 2012–April 1, 2012. Extracts got presented at “Global Prayers Theme Days”, 22. – 26.02. Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin.
